I was born in Rochester, I grew up in South Jersey, and moved to Long Island when I was 14. The New York Mets are my favorite baseball team. My whole family is Mets fans so they made sure that I was one real young. My grandfather used to buy me those white 1980s Mets T-shirts with the blue sleeves. That’s what I used to wear when I was a kid. In those days, Doc and Darryl were my favorite players. When I was really young, I lived in New Jersey outside of Philadelphia and one of my uncles used to buy me Mets tickets vs. the Phillies every year for my birthday. Those were great…Good times…
I’ve been a Mets fan all of my life and it’s a very humbling experience. My expectations are always low, but I always hope that they will be better than than the expectations that I set. I always hope that the Mets will make the playoffs. And once in a while, they give us a quality season like 2006. Even though they didn’t win the NLCS or the World Series, they made me proud. From a Mets fan point of view, that was a great season. Even though that was a great season, I just wonder what would’ve happened if Carlos Beltran swung at that pitch in Game 7 of the NLCS. You never know what could’ve happened if he swung. It could’ve been like Bill Buckner all over again. I was at that game and it was like the MC pressed the ‘mute’ button in the loudest stadium in baseball when they called strike three on Beltran.
That’s what being a Mets fan is all about. We know we’re not going to win all of the time. It’s been so long though so we wonder when it will actually happen. Is it going to happen while we have my new favorite players: Jose Reyes and David Wright? We’ll have to wait and see.
