Saturday’s Mets News: Will it Ever Stop Raining?

April 05, 2008 By: Keith Category: Johan Santana, John Maine, MLB, Mike Pelfrey, New York Mets, Roger McDowell, Tom Glavine No Comments →

Last night’s Mets-Braves game was rained out.  It is still raining down in Hotlanta so we don’t know what is going to happen to today’s game.

Worst case scenario, we can watch both Final Four games.  So how is everybody doing in their March Madness brackets?  This was the first year I actually picked all four 1 Seeds to make the Final Four.  Duke was the weakest 2 Seed I’ve ever seen.  But if they are a 2 Seed then everybody else is just garbage.  That was my thought process for actually picking all four 1 Seeds.  The Big East was completely overrated, and I didn’t need to see them get knocked out early to prove it.  Georgetown a 2 Seed?  Pitt a 4 Seed?  UConn a 4 Seed?  Who put the tournament together?  It is very boring when the 1 Seeds run right through it.  It should get better now because two 1 Seeds will lose today.  I have UNC and UCLA in the finals with UNC being crowned king.

Back to baseball, I hope today’s game gets played because the weekend is lost if 2 out of 3 games are postponed.

Rain falls on Maine in postponement - Marty Noble reported that last night’s Mets vs. Braves game has been officially postponed, and it will be made up as a doubleheader on May 20, 2008.

Rain brings Hudson and Maine to FOX - Mark Bowman pointed out that there is a pretty good pitchers duel in FOX’s Game of the Week after Friday’s rainout.  John Maine will face Tim Hudson in the first Mets-Braves game of ‘08.

Former Met recalls foray in outfield - Jon Cooper got a 1986 story from Roger McDowell.

Pelfrey to miss his turn at Turner Field - Due to last night’s game getting postponed, Mike Pelfrey will not make his season debut against the Braves today according to Jon Cooper.  Pelfrey got bumped to Wednesday at home against the Phillies.

Tonight’s game might not take place due to tornado warnings in and around Atlanta.  They mentioned that the start will most likely be delayed, but they will try to squeeze it in between storms.  This means they may not get enough innings in to make it a game.  I hope they play because I’m looking forward to the pitching dual between John Maine and Tim Hudson.  I’m really excited about these two three-game sets between the NL East rivals that are supposed to be Playoff contenders.  Play ball!

Thirty members of the Shea family will be on hand to help unveil a new Shea logo, which will hang alongside the team’s three retired numbers, and travel with the Mets to Citi Field next season.”

Glavine to face former mates on FOX - Mark Bowman pointed out that Tom Glavine will pitch against the Mets on Saturday, and Bowman captured Glavine’s thoughts about facing his former team.  I only remember Tommy beating the Braves once as a Met so it’s a good thing he’s not pitching for us this weekend.

Friday’s Mets News

March 07, 2008 By: Keith Category: Damion Easley, MLB, Marlon Anderson, Moises Alou, New York Mets, Oliver Perez, Omar Minaya, Pedro Martinez, Robert Parnell, Spring Training, Tom Glavine No Comments →

Oliver PerezSo even though the Mets have been devastated by a wrath of injuries, they managed to win 5 straight games.  It kind of went unnoticed.  Most of them came from late inning heroics.  The Mets are losing to the Indians right now by a score of 8-6 in the 8th inning.  Oliver Perez got the start, and didn’t pitch so well.  Maybe the Mets have another comeback in them…

Notes: Anderson, Easley good to go - Anthony DiComo noted that Marlon Anderson and Damion Easley are healthy and ready to return.

Minor League Report: Robert Parnell - Anthony DiComo provided a Bio about a right-hander named Robert Parnell.

Pedro to throw sim game on Friday - Anthony DiComo stated that Pedro Martinez will pitch in a simulated game today because yesterday’s game got rained out.

Newsday:

Injury-riddled Mets looking to plug holes - David Lennon chatted with Omar Minaya about the possible replacements for Moises Alou.  Here is what Lennon wrote:

“We’ve already identified teams that have outfield situations that have surpluses,” Minaya said, “and we’ll keep an eye on those.”

The Mets have talked about a possible deal for the Tigers’ Marcus Thames. The Pirates’ Xavier Nady, a solid righthanded bat and a former Met, would be a good fit. On the free-agent front, Kenny Lofton remains unsigned, but Minaya chuckled when someone brought up Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa. “It’s fair to say we’ll go with someone internal right now,” Minaya said.

Sunday’s Mets News

January 27, 2008 By: Keith Category: Fernando Martinez, MLB, New York Mets, Tom Glavine No Comments →

Johan SantanaEach night that I’ve gone to sleep since the collapse, I’ve hoped that I would wake up and see that the Mets signed Johan Santana.  According the sources below, it seems likely within 10 days.  I really hope that the Mets can seal the deal.  It also means that Santana would be with the Mets before pitchers and catchers with is another plus.

Glavine puts Mets finale in perspective - Tom Glavine elaborated his thoughts about his final game with the Mets when he gave up 7 runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Newsday:

Mets could get Santana within 10 days - In this article, Ken Davidoff wrote “The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Sunday that a trade of Santana, a Minnesota Twin since 2000, “is expected to occur within 10 days.” That matches a widely held industry belief that the Twins have every intention of moving Santana before the start of spring training.”  Later on, Davidoff wrote that the Mets are holding back on signing Livan Hernandez until the Twins let the Mets know about Johan Santana.  The timing makes sense because pitchers and catchers is a few weeks away.  I haven’t heard a media outlet deny the status of this rumor yet.  If I do then I will let you know as I have in the past.  How will Johan look in blue and orange?

Martinez’s rising stock sure is Amazin’ - Ken Davidoff pointed out how fast Lastings Milledge’s stock tanked while Fernando Martinez’s stock keeps rising.  Davidoff feels like the Mets are reluctant to include Martinez in a package for Johan Santana.

Most of today’s news is an extension of yesterday’s news.  David Wright finished 4th overall in the MVP voting…we knew that he wasn’t the favorite after the Mets collapsed.  David never collapsed though, he was clutch right until the end…along with Alou, but that wasn’t enough.

Guillermo MotaThe better news of the day is that the Mets traded Guillermo Mota to the Brewers for catcher Johnny Estrada.  I was soooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy when I got home and read this article.  I was dreading the fact that I had to watch this steroid using non-producing bum have to pitch in 2008.  I don’t know if Estrada is the real deal at the plate, but it can’t hurt to add another guy to the roster.  I do know that I don’t have to watch Mota blow any more games, including the NLCS game that he gave away.  Thanks Omar, this will make for one Happy Thanksgiving.  Christmas is coming soon…Are you going to get me Johan Santana?  Feel free to check it out.

David EcksteinIt seems so strange to me that teams need players, but players don’t exist.  When the Metropolitans were discussing acquiring A-Rod, they were considering moving him to second base because that’s what they need.  Now the Mets are meeting with Eckstein, but they want him to play second base.  Why don’t second baseman exist?  If they did then the Mets wouldn’t be looking into players that play other positions to play second base.  I think Eckstein would be a good fit for the Mets.  He’s a gritty little man, and he plays with heart.  Heart was something that was lost sometime during the 2007 season…not by all, but by most.  I’m sure you all remember how great of a Postseason Eckstein had in 2006, and then he went on to win the World Series MVP.

I’m very disappointed that the Mets didn’t make an offer to Lo Duca.  There are a few reasons for this.  Lo Duca was hurt all season and put up the same offensive numbers as Torrealba.  Lo Duca would’ve been cheaper than Torrealba.  Lo Duca already is a Met.  Lo Duca is Italian.  Now, there are no Italians left on the team.  The same thing goes for the Jews since Green is no longer on the roster.  The Italians and Jews combine for 50% of the population on Long Island, and should be represented in some way on the team.  The Mets already had about 6 out of 8 Latino players in the starting lineup.  That doesn’t bother me, but to go ahead and make it 8 out of 8 then it does.  I don’t mean any disrespect to anybody that is Latino, but it is tougher for me to relate to a team when none of the players are like me.  The one thing that I do like about Torrealba is the fact that he’s only 29 years-old.  Since we have him, I hope he can bat better than .318 like Lo Duca did in ‘06.

The Mets signed Ramon Castro as their backup catcher.  That’s great news.  I didn’t want him to be the starter, but I did want him to be the backup again.  He had an awesome season.

Glavine seems like he’s heading back to Atlanta.  The Braves made their offer, and they are waiting for Glavine to counter it.  That doesn’t bother me because I consider him a Brave anyway and have trouble rooting for him.  If we lose Glavine then it forces Omar to go out and get an ACE…Johan Santana…wink wink.
