Thusday’s Mets News: Wags Blows 3rd Save

June 12, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, Chris Aguila, Darryl Strawberry, Johan Santana, MLB, Marlon Anderson, Mike Pelfrey, New York Mets, Omar Minaya, SNY, Scott Schoeneweis, Shea Stadium, Willie Randolph No Comments →

It’s tough to watch this ‘08 Mets team.  After Pelfrey pitches the game of his life, they give it away and need Beltran to save the day.  Shame on Willie for not allowing Big Pelf to try to get his first complete game shutout.  How is young pitcher supposed to build up his resume, and confidence, when the manager pulls him after the best outing in his career?  When else is he supposed to get a complete game shutout?  Stuff like that may make an inconsistent, young pitcher more confident.  That confidence may pay off in the long run.  As for today, Santana pitched seven scoreless innings before handing it over to the Bullpen who blew it…again.  What is wrong with Wagner?  Three straight blown saves?  The Bullpen was the biggest problem the team had in ‘07.  The Bullpen was dominant until July, and then it was downhill from there.  It just kept getting worse and worse until they were eliminated, and I saw it coming.  I knew that even if they made the Playoffs that they weren’t going to do so well because the Bullpen was giving up way too many games.  It is the same thing in ‘08 because it’s the same cast of characters.  Sanchez returned, but I thought he would’ve been better than he has been so far.  Omar brought in Wise who hasn’t been anything special.  Otherwise, it’s the same people who couldn’t get it done in ‘07 so why would they be able to do it in ‘08?

Friday’s Mets News: Battle of Underachievers

May 23, 2008 By: Keith Category: David Wright, Johan Santana, MLB, Moises Alou, New York Mets, Omar Minaya, Pedro Martinez, SNY, Shea Stadium, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Coors FieldAfter a four-game skid, the Mets have to figure out how to turn it around.  Once the losing streak ends, I do believe that they will go on and win exactly that amount of games because that’s trend that they’ve set in May.  Hopefully, the Mets can smack the ball all over Coors Field.  In appearance, Coors Field looks exactly like Citizens Bank Park (except it is purple instead of red) so maybe the Mets will have success just like they did in Philly.  Perhaps being a mile high and some thin air might do them right.  Omar changed his plans for the weekend to go and be with his team.  Hmmm…

Thursday’s Mets News: Back to .500

May 22, 2008 By: Keith Category: MLB, Moises Alou, New York Mets, Pedro Martinez, Ryan Church, SNY, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Somehow, the Mets need to figure out how to win tonight so they can get back above .500.  They already got smoked three times by the Braves in this series.  They keep losing, all of this drama is going on with Willie, Church had a concussion on Tuesday, and Alou left last night’s game which makes all of this even worse.  I guess this is more my fault than the Mets fault.  In 2007 and 2008, I actually had high expectations for them.  The Mets had the biggest collapse in MLB history in ‘07, and it isn’t very sunny these days in Queens.  I’ve always been a pessimistic Mets fan so the Mets always exceded my expectations, except last year and this year.  It made me happy when I watched them because I didn’t think that they were capable of making it to October baseball.  I get really amped when they make the Playoffs.  When they go deep into the Playoffs like in ‘99, ‘00, or ‘06, it raises expectations for the franchise.  The Mets have never been an organization that has been able to sustain success over an extended period of time so it’s my fault for buying into what they are selling.  I will go back to being the old Keith, and expect nothing.  If they do nothing then I won’t get all worked up.  If they do something then I will get pumped up.

Wright expresses dismay at losses - Marty Noble summarized last night’s game between the Mets and the Braves.

Mets need to replace outfield duo - Ryan Lavner put together a pregame analysis for tonight’s game between the Mets and the Braves.

Grogginess clears for Church - “Less than 24 hours after he suffered an apparent concussion, the Mets’ starting right fielder said he was free of concussion symptoms and concern about his latest medical episode.”

Alou leaves early with left calf strain - Marty Noble reported that Moises Alou left last night’s game in the fourth inning.  “The club announced shortly thereafter that Alou had a strained left calf. The outfielder will be heading back to New York for an MRI on Thursday.”

Randolph apologizes for recent remarks

Newsday:

Wednesday’s Mets News: Fred Wilpon’s Statement on Piazza

May 21, 2008 By: Keith Category: Fred Wilpon, MLB, Mike Piazza, New York Mets, Pedro Martinez, Ryan Church, SNY, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Fred WilponI’m trying to remain positive with my boys from Queens.  The Mets swept the Yankees which was fun, but Willie keeps talking and the media is over-doing the situation.   It seems like each writer for each newspaper had to write their own article on Willie.  That’s too much.  Willie keeps making it worse though.

On the day that Mike Piazza announced his retirement, the Mets got swept by the Braves in a double header.  Fred Wilpon released this statement on Piazza,

On behalf of everyone at the Mets we salute Mike for his Hall of Fame caliber accomplishments in our game and with our team. Mike electrified New York City and energized our franchise after we acquired him in 1998. He was an integral part of our 2000 National League Championship club. Mike played the game with passion, class and heart — symbolic of our city. We wish Mike, his wife, Alicia, and daughter Nicoletta all health and happiness as he begins a new chapter in his life.

The Mets need to come out with some fight and even up this series.  They already had a bad record against the Braves this year, and it just got even worse yesterday.

Pedro leaves Mets to be with ill father - Pedro Martinez was supposed to throw in a bullpen session on Wednesday, but he “returned to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday morning after receiving word that the condition of Pablo Martinez had worsened. The Mets had no sense of how the latest development would affect the schedule for Martinez’s return to active duty.”

Mets need Mylanta in Atlanta with loss - Marty Noble summarized last night’s game between the Mets and the Braves.

Mets look to muster support for Pelfrey - Marty Noble put together a pregame analysis for tonight’s game between the Mets and the Braves.

Dazed Church heads to hospital for tests - “Mets right fielder Ryan Church was hospitalized on Tuesday night after suffering a mild concussion in the ninth inning of the Mets’ 6-2 loss to the Braves.”  I saw the collission between Church and Escobar, but I wasn’t sure if he suffered a concussion.  That’s very unfortunate because he suffered one in Spring Training also.  Hopefully he recovers relatively quickly.

Friday’s Mets News: Subway Series

May 16, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, MLB, New York Mets, SNY, Shea Stadium, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Subway SeriesThe 2008 Subway Series will begin tonight, if it stops raining.  And man is it raining.  Tonight’s game will probably get postponed.  If you’ve followed what I’ve written then you’d know that I think the Subway Series is overhyped Interleague play.  I’m not a fan of Interleague games at all.  It wouldn’t bother me if they eliminated it from the schedule.  If they did it at all, I think that it would be better if they did it like the NFL where each NL division plays a specific AL division per year and then it alternates annually.  That way, each division plays the same opponents.  For instance, if the NL East played the AL East in 2008, then if the NL East played AL Central in 2009, and so on.  It seems like the Interleague play goes on forever.  Or is it that the MLB season goes on forever?  I don’t know.  And then there is the difference in rules which is the dumbest thing in sports.  That doesn’t happen in the NFL, NBA, or the NHL.  The difference in rules is buch league.  Anyway, here’s the probable pitching matchups for the weekend:

  • 04/16/2008 - Johan Santana (4-2) - Darrell Rasner (2-0)
  • 04/17/2008 - Oliver Perez (3-3) - Andy Pettitte (3-4)
  • 04/18/2008 - John Maine (5-2) - Chien-Ming Wang (6-1)

Randolph tabbed as NL All-Star coach - Tom Singer reported that these coaches will join Colorado manager Clint Hurdle as the coaches of the 2008 NL All-Star coaching staff: In addition to Willie Randolph and Black, Hurdle will be assisted in All-Star duties by his own Rockies coaching staff — pitching coach Bob Apodaca, hitting coach Alan Cockrell, third base/infield coach Mike Gallego, first base coach Glenallen Hill, bullpen coach Rick Mathews and bench coach Jamie Quirk.

Alou eager to play at Yankee Stadium - Anthony DiComo put together a pregame analysis for tonight’s game between the Mets and the Yankees.

Why are they over there and not being interviewed? Oh, I’ve got it. They’re gone. — shocker.”  Wagner was pissed because his teammates weren’t around after the game to deal with the press.

Friday’s Mets News: Braves-Mets

April 25, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, Brian Schneider, David Wright, Duaner Sanchez, Gustavo Molina, Joe Smith, MLB, Mike Pelfrey, New York Mets, SNY No Comments →

The good news is that I’m flying down to Charleston, SC for a wedding this weekend.  The bad news is that I won’t be able to cover the Mets-Braves series.  I’m a Rangers fan too so I’m going to miss a Braves-Mets series and Games 1 & 2 of the Rangers-Penguins series.  I set my DVR to record all of that except for Game 1 of the Rangers-Penguins series because it’s on Versus, and I don’t have it.  I’m also going to miss the NFL Draft.  Our output is going to be limited this weekend.  When I get home, I’m going to watch all the Mets-Braves series because I’d never miss it.

Here’s the probable pitching matchups:

  • 04/25/2008 - Jair Jurrjens (2-2) - Mike Pelfrey (2-0)
  • 04/26/2008 - Tim Hudson (3-1) - John Maine (1-2)
  • 04/27/2008 - John Smoltz (3-1) - Nelson Figueroa Jr. (1-1)

I’m not sure about tonight, but the pitching matchups looks like it’s in the Braves favor on Saturday and Sunday.
