Monday’s Mets News: Back to the Left Coast

June 16, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, Brian Schneider, Brooklyn Cyclones, Fred Wilpon, Jeff Wilpon, MLB, Minor League Baseball, New York Mets, Omar Minaya, Rick Peterson, Robinson Cancel, Ryan Church, Tom Nieto, Willie Randolph No Comments →

So Willie managed to make it through the weekend after the Mets won the series against the Rangers two games to one.  Now the Mets are in Cali to take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim or something like that.  Not really sure what that means…lol.  That would be like the New York Jets of East Ruthersford.  No matter how you slice it or dice it, it just sounds dumb.  The Angels went from representing the state to representing Anaheim to representing L.A. and Anaheim in my lifetime.  Who knows what they did prior to that.  Anyway, here’s the pitching probables for the series.

  • 06/16/2008 - Mike Pelfrey (2-6) - Jered Weaver (6-6)
  • 06/17/2008 - Johan Santana (7-4) - John Lackey (3-1)
  • 06/18/2008 - Oliver Perez (5-4) - Jon Garland (6-4)

Mets.com:

Mets heave sigh of relief with split - Marty Noble summarized the second Rangers-Mets game yesterday.

Team cycle becoming a factor for Mets - Jon Blau wrote up a pregame analysis for tonight’s game between the Angels and the Mets.

Late-inning heroics not enough - Jon Blau summarized the first Rangers-Mets game yesterday.

Church itching to be back with Mets - Ryan Church stated, “It’s progressing every day, it’s getting better. I haven’t had any spells or anything like that. It’s just one of those things now, waiting out time on the DL.”

Newsday:

Willie deserves better from Jeff Wilpon - Wallace Matthews wrote that,

No one with the Mets has told Randolph he’s in trouble, not to his face, anyway. He must read it in the papers, leaked through Wilpon’s media lapdogs, hear it on the radio, discern it in the lukewarm votes of confidence from his general manager and the ominous inaccessibility of his bosses.

Randolph gets on plane, going day to day - Mark Herrmann pointed out that,

Minaya was asked by reporters if Randolph and the coaching staff will be working when the team plays the Angels in Anaheim, Calif., tonight, and gave only this vague response: “Willie is our manager. That situation is always under evaluation.”

When he was pressed again about the manager and the coaches, Minaya kept repeating the same basic theme. “You know my feelings on it,” he said. “I think we’re not playing to our potential and I would like to leave myself room to evaluate these things.”

Nine years since last hit, Cancel gets a big one - Katie Strang covered Robinson Cancel’s big pinch hit two-run single off Texas starter Kason Gabbard to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning.  Strang also pointed out, “Before his at-bat, fans were chanting Martinez’s name in hopes he’d get another at-bat during his first home start of the season, but fortunately for embattled Mets manager Willie Randolph, he did not oblige.”  That was a gutsy move by Willie, and he’s lucky it worked out.

New York Daily News:

Rick Peterson, Tom Nieto facing ax but Willie Randolph safe - for now - Adam Rubin wrote,

Sources have told the Daily News that principal owner Fred Wilpon and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon have authorized Minaya to make the call on whether to fire Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto. Bench coach Jerry Manuel would ascend to manager if Randolph is ousted, while Triple-A New Orleans manager Ken Oberkfell and pitching coach Dan Warthen would join the major league staff.

A team insider speculated that Randolph could survive a first round of firings, saying: “I think the coaches are in trouble. That may be the compromise for now.”

I have no idea how firing the first base coach is going to get this team rolling.  Minaya has to realize that his players are the problem.

Mets bullpen finds a way to save face in second game vs. Rangers

Slow-footed Brian Schneider easily out at the plate - Now that was some poor base running by Brian Schneider.

Friday’s Mets News: When Willie Be Whacked?

June 13, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, Brian Schneider, Howard Johnson, Jerry Manuel, Johan Santana, Minor League Baseball, Moises Alou, New York Mets, Shea Stadium, Willie Randolph No Comments →

So pretty much everybody in New York knows that John Heyman of SI.com broke the story about how Willie could be run out of Flushing in the very near future, but not as soon as today.  Heyman stated the same thing on WFAN a few hours ago, and on the Mets pregame show on SNY.  Here’s part of the article:

Willie Randolph’s status as Mets manager is extremely tenuous now. General manager Omar Minaya is seriously considering changing managers and at least a couple of the team’s coaches, sources told SI.com.

A Mets official indicated that nothing was expected to be decided today regarding Randolph’s status. But that doesn’t preclude something from happening later this weekend. Sources indicate his hold on the job is shaky, at best.

Should Randolph be fired, bench coach Jerry Manuel will take over, sources told SI.com.

Willie Randolph

Personally, I don’t know how Jerry Manuel is going to do.  I’m not really a fan of his.  If the Mets really fire Willie then this Manuel dude is one of the last guys that I want to manage the Mets.  I would prefer that they kept Randolph over Manuel and got rid of everybody on the team except Santana and Wright.  Clean house Omar.  Accept the fact that you do not have a championship caliber team, and so you can fix the problem.  In case Omar ever finds Die Hard Mets Fan, our vote is for Bobby V. of course!

Mets.com:

Yanks-Mets set makeup date for June 27 - The intra-city rivals will meet at Yankee Stadium for a 2:05 p.m. ET game on Friday, June 27, and then face off in the nightcap at Shea Stadium at 8:10 p.m. ET. The original game was to be played on May 16.

Schneider playing for Dad every day

Mets hope turnaround starts vs. Rangers - Jon Blau wrote up a pregame analysis for tonight’s game between the Rangers and the Mets.

Newsday:

Wagner blows another save as Mets fall to D-Backs - Mark Herrmann summarized yesterday’s Diamondbacks-Mets game.

Mets needing big change could cost Randolph job

Could Mets hitting coach Johnson take the fall?

New York Daily News:

Sources: Willie Randolph’s tenure as Mets manager in grave danger - Adam Rubin wrote, “Willie Randolph’s tenure as Mets manager is in grave danger of ending this weekend, sources tell the Daily News. It’s believed that bench coach Jerry Manuel would succeed Randolph if the manager is fired. Randolph has a four-year record of 299-252 with the Mets.”  Manuel is going to be worse than Randolph, but maybe it will work.  Something has to work.

Monday’s Mets News: Trying to Move Forward After Sweep

June 09, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, MLB, Mike Carp, Minor League Baseball, New York Mets, Ramon Castro, Shea Stadium No Comments →

As soon as the Mets seemed like they were getting hot, they got swept in a four-game series by the last place Padres.  The pitching was pretty good all series because they lost three games by a score of 2-1.  The offense couldn’t put up more than one run, which is absolutely pathetic, until yesterday when they scored six runs.  It was Wags who was brought in with two outs in the eigth inning yesterday who blew the save allowing four runs.  They are two games under .500 and will face the D-Backs tomorrow.  I’m still waiting for something to happen to get this team heading in the right direction.  Is Willie going to get fired before they get players with heart?  And when will it happen?  Hopefully not before it’s too late because I want to watch my boys in blue and orange playing October baseball.  I didn’t get to watch it last season because of the collapse so the Mets owe me one.

Mets.com:

Mets swept painfully in San Diego - Marty Noble summarized yesterday’s game between the Mets and the Padres.

Mets hoping for quick return of Alou - Jon Blau wrote a pregame analysis for tomorrow night’s game between the Diamondbacks and the Mets.

Castro out of lineup after late arrival - Marty Noble tells us that Ramon Castro, “was removed from the starting lineup shortly after noon, shortly after he arrived at PETCO Park for the 4:05 p.m. ET game against the Padres. His late arrival was neither excused nor unnoticed.”  Noble also stated that Casanova started in placed of Castro, and that Castro was embarrased and will be fined.  I’m certain that Willie wasn’t too happy about this.  Especially when the team got swept by the last place Padres and is rocking a 30-32 record.

Carp reels in six big RBIs for B-Mets - Steve Conley lets us know that Mike Carp, “slugged a grand slam and a two-run homer and the Binghamton Mets homered five times and pounded out 17 hits in a 17-4 rout of the New Britain Rock Cats at NYSEG Stadium.”

Newsday:

THIS DAY AT THE OLD BALLPARK - Newsday lets us know what took place at Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium on June 9 of a year in the past.

Mets swept as Wagner gives up three-run homer - I can’t get on Wagner because he’s been great, but it was bad timing because Willie brought him in in the eigth inning because the Mets needed a win.

Wednesday’s Mets News: Good Job by Pedro

June 04, 2008 By: Keith Category: Brian Schneider, MLB, Mike Pelfrey, Minor League Baseball, Moises Alou, New York Mets, Oliver Perez, Pedro Martinez, Savannah Sand Gnats, Shea Stadium, Willie Randolph No Comments →

What a difference a day makes.  One night after Ollie did his Glavine impersonation, Pedro made his first start in two months and was pretty effective.  Martinez had good command and got his fastball up into the 90s.  And look at all of the buzz about Petey below.  Dozens of articles were written by the media.  The Star-Ledger put out an inning-by-inning breakdown of his first game back.  This guy barely pitches anymore, but he gets a ton of hype.  If he pitches a little less, which is not at all, then he can replace Mr. Met as the official mascot.

Pedro happy to get his feet wet - Adam Rubin put together a great analysis of Pedro’s return last night.

John Smoltz to have season-ending shoulder surgery - The AP reported that John Smoltz will have season-ending shoulder surgery.  He hopes to return in 2009, but it may be the end of his career.  As much as I hate watching the Mets face Smoltz, the guy has been the best pitcher in the Majors for about two decades.  Hopefully he recovers and gets to pitch again.  I always thought he was a classy guy.

New York Post:

PISTOL PETEY

THIS TIME, SCOTT’S NO RELIEF - Bart Hubbuch discussed how Scott Schoeneweis got knocked around in the ninth inning last night.

PELFREY GRATEFUL METS STICKING WITH HIM - Mike Pelfrey stated, “I was prepared mentally for whatever they wanted me to do. If that meant going to New Orleans or the bullpen, it would have been nothing new. To be able to stay in the rotation is a great feeling. I want to show them they made the right decision.”  Going into the season, I wanted him to be in the rotation over El Duque because I wanted to know how good or bad he really is if he goes into the season knowing he’s a starter rather than a fillin for somebody on the DL like in years past.  Now, it is obvious that he’s just not that good.  The Mets don’t have many short term options so we’ll have to see what Omar does in the upcoming months.

New York Times:

Martínez Gives Mets Lift, and Some Life - Ben Shpigel summarized last night’s game between the Mets and the Giants.

Last Season’s Success Hard to Duplicate for Mets’ Pérez - Oh yes it is.  I hope that the Mets bring Ollie in front of the arbitrators so they can explain how poorly he has performed after the first two months of the season and get a partial refund.

Sunday’s Mets News: Will Mets Sweep Phils?

April 20, 2008 By: Keith Category: Aaron Heilman, Brian Schneider, David Wright, Eddie Kunz, Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, MLB, Minor League Baseball, Nelson Figueroa Jr., New York Mets, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Who doesn’t love it when they know the Mets have a chance to sweep a divisional rival?  We know it’s a 50/50 chance tonight, and it is less stressful to watch the final game of a series that has already been won.  It makes it even better when the Metsies do it to the NL East Champs.  Today’s game begins at 8:05 p.m., and it will be aired on ESPN.  Mike Pelfrey will be facing Adam Eaton, and you don’t want to miss it.

Heilman gets right back on horse - Marty Noble walks us through the eighth inning of yesterday’s game between the Mets and the Phillies where Aaron Heilman came in and struck out two batters with the bases loaded.

Pelfrey, Mets go for sweep of rival Phils - Joseph Santoliquito put together a pregame analysis for tonight’s game between the Mets and the Phillies.

Schneider sore, OK after injury scare - Marty Noble reported that the Mets thought that Brian Schneider might of suffered a broken bone in his right arm from a foul tip by Chase Utley on a 97-mph fastball from Billy Wagner that struck Schneider on the top of the forearm and eliminated some of the function of the arm.  Noble wrote that, “X-rays were negative, and Schneider intended to ice it all night. But the Mets were already making plans to summon an understudy from their Triple-A team.”

Mets putting last year in rearview mirror - Mike Bauman feels like the Mets are turning the page of 2007 by beating the Phillies four straight games.

Reyes feeling no ill effects after collision - Joseph Santoliquito wrote that, “Jose Reyes woke up Saturday morning without any swelling or wooziness and without feeling any after effects of being jarred in the head by the knee of Phillies second baseman Chase Utley while attempting to steal second in the third inning of Friday night’s game.”

Randolph not happy about missed sign - Joseph Santoliquito found out that Willie Randolph wasn’t happy that Luis Castillo didn’t pick up the signal for a suicide squeeze during Friday night’s game against the Phillies.  If Castillo can’t even walk then how is he supposed to pick up a sign, or more importantly execute anything.  I have no idea how Luis got a four-year deal worth more than the league minimum when they guy can’t walk, hit, or field.

Newsday:

Start spreading news: Starters ace it! - Johnette Howard pointed out how great the starting pitchers have been for the Mets so far this season.

Mets beat Phillies, 4-2, for fifth straight win - David Lennon summarized last night’s game between the Mets and the Phillies.

Determination, patience land Figueroa with Mets - Barbara Barker wrote up a Bio about Nelson Figueroa Jr., and how he ended up back on the Mets.

METS NOTEBOOK: Battered battery member - David Lennon also talks about the injury status of Schneider.

New York Daily News:

Jose Reyes, Oliver Perez lead Mets past Phillies for fourth straight time - Adam Rubin also summarized yesterday’s game between the Phillies and the Mets.

Cheering over Jose Reyes injury pains Billy Wagner - Adam Rubin gathered the thoughts of Billy Wagner on the Phillies fans after they booed when Reyes getting the wind knocked out of him.  Wagner said,

It’s really sad when humanity comes to the point where somebody getting hurt, it’s fun to watch. It’s sad when that happens. Nobody wants anybody to get hurt. I don’t want Jimmy Rollins getting hurt. I don’t want Pat Burrell to get hurt. I don’t want none of these guys. I want to compete against these guys because they’re the best, and you want to beat the best. You don’t want excuses. When you see Reyes laying there - it’s a tough shot, a clean play - and the fans cheering that he’s hurt, that just goes and shows you volumes about where our society is headed.

Friday’s Mets News

February 22, 2008 By: Keith Category: Billy Wagner, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Eddie Kunz, Johan Santana, MLB, Minor League Baseball, New York Mets, Oliver Perez, Orlando Hernandez, Pedro Martinez No Comments →

John KrukThe Mets are working on creating a divisional rivalry.  The closest thing they have to that is the Braves, but that’s because I grew up in it.  There isn’t any folklore passed down for decades between the Mets and the Braves though.  The Mets are an expansion team which makes it tough to form a rivalry, and the Braves bounced around from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta and were never in the NL East until 1994.  The Phillies have been around forever, but there hasn’t been this kind of hype between the two team since I can remember.  I can’t even remember the last time the Phillies were good.  They went to the World Series in ‘93 with all of those fat beer guzzling guys with mullets like Kruk, Daulton, and Dykstra.

For two years, Atlanta hasn’t won the division.  The Mets won ‘06 and the Phillies won in ‘07 when the Mets gave up that huge lead.  Last year, the smack talking began with Jimmy Rollins.  This year it started with Carlos Beltran, and other players from both sides find a way to make themselves heard.  The coaches are getting questioned by the media.  It doesn’t seem like it will stop until they play some games on the field.  If you read below then you will see that the fans are buying into it too.

Just one of those days - Marty Noble lets you know who was hitting the ball out of the park off of Santana in BP today.

Perez wins arbitration case - Marty Noble reported that Oliver Perez “had prevailed in a salary-arbitration case and been awarded a substantial raise — from the $2.325 million he earned last season to the $6.5 million he had sought in the process that both players and clubs regard as a crapshoot. The panel of Steven Wolf, Robert Bailey and Elizabeth Neumeier concluded that Perez’s value was at least one dollar greater than the midpoint between $6.5 million and the $4.725 million proposal the Mets submitted last month.”

Minor League Report: Jonathon Niese - Marty Noble found out what the Mets think of Jonathon Niese and other pitchers in the Minors.

Marlins’ series in Puerto Rico is off - Joe Frisaro noted that the three-game series between the Mets and the Marlins at the end of July will no longer be played in Puerto Rico as intended.  The series will be played at Dolphin Stadium.

Newsday:

More fightin’ words between Mets, Phillies - Beltran has more to say, Wagner chimed in, and Wright handled it dipomatically as usual.

Chipper not interested in Mets-Phillies flap - Larry said “I really don’t care what’s being said, the Phillies and the Mets know we’ll be competitive. They know we’ll be heard from.”  Jones must feel left out.  Poor baby.  I’m still waiting for Chipper to retire.

Notes: El Duque could retire after ‘08 - I guess El Duque doesn’t want to pitch until he’s 60.

E-mail from Port St. Lucie - David Lennon told us that Pedro’s new nickname is Picasso, and Pedro loves it.

METS, PHILLIES GO MOUTH TO MOUTH - Pedro throws some jabs at the Phillies now.

AMAZIN’ IT TOOK THIS LONG TO FORM RIVALRY - Mike Vaccaro says it’s about time there is a rivalry between the Phillies and the Mets.

New York Times:

With Sinker in Tow, a Journey Begins - The Mets drafted Eddie Kunz out of Oregon State last year, and Ben Shpigel found out how Kunz is doing a year later.

The Star-Ledger:

No mas for Puerto Rico series

Mets-Phillies a Rivalry 90 Minutes Away - Matthew Artus included quotes from some Mets about the Phillies.  Artus also found out that there is some shady stuff going on between Mets fans and Phillies fans right now.  MetsBlog was tipped off that the Phillies somehow began selling tickets a day before they were supposed to.  A group of Phillies fans have a Facebook account, and this is what they want to accomplish according to MetsBlog:

As noted in an earlier post to MetsBlog, according to their Facebook Group, more than 500 Phillies fans are planning a ‘Take Over’ of Shea Stadium during the Nationally-televised Phillies-Mets game on September 6, because they are ‘sick and tired of stupid Mets fans taking over Citizen’s Bank Park.’

MetsBlog began their own takeover of Citizens Bank Park, and Artus found this Phillies blog The700Level that got wind of what MetsBlog is trying to do.

Mets’ nice rookie is nasty on the mound - Jeremy Cothran said that about Eddie Kunz.
